The Lithuanian Art Museum is proud to announce the opening of the National Gallery of Art on Saturday 20 June, 2009. The gallery will be officially opened by Valdas Adamkus the President of the Republic of Lithuania.

A number of festive events are scheduled for the whole present year, and the summer season will be marked by the greatest Lithuania's Millennium festivities.

On 4th June at 7.30 pm "The Millennium Odyssey" yacht 'Ambersail" LTU 1000 will be mooring at Tower Millennium Pier (Lower Thames STreet, RC3N 4DT) after visiting all five continents, and will be met by the Lithuanian Embassy, Tower Millennium Pier officials and the Lithuanian community in the UK.

 There has never been a better time to visit Lithuania than now as the country enters its second Millennium. Exactly one thousand years later capital Vilnius has a golden opportunity to reveal its secrets as the European Capital of Culture 2009. The year will see more than 300 events take place across Vilnius and 120 projects planned for the 2010 and 2011 ahead to mark the occasion.

Embassy of Lithuania in Ireland and Lithuanian National Tourism Office in London on 22 April 2009 hosted the presentation "Lithuania - Discover the Gem of the Baltics!" to the Irish travel trade and media in the National Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire.

The Eastern European Festival will celebrate sights, sounds and smells of 13 Eastern European countries during one weekend. Festival will take place in Newark Showground in Nottinghamshire, August 21-23, 2009.

The year 2009 is a special occasion for Lithuania's tourism and cultural development. We celebrate the Millennium anniversary of the first mention of Lithuania's name in a historical document, the Annales Quedlingburgenses. In addition, in 2009, exactly one thousand years later, Vilnius has become the European Capital of Culture. 

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tom Hartley, will attend a special concert and reception next week, organised by the Lithuanian Embassy  and Lithuanian Tourism Office, to celebrate the Lithuanian capital Vilnius becoming ‘European Capital of Culture 2009'.

The National Programme Vilnius - European Capital of Culture in 2009 should give an impetus for more active involvement of the disabled into the cultural life of the city. The authorities plan to adapt cultural sites for this group. 

On May 17, flyLAL-Lithuanian Airlines, the Lithuanian national carrier is starting direct flights from London Stansted to Palanga, the Lithuanian resort on the "amber" coast so called because this local gold is washed up all along the beach. 

“Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 will be the first to hold a cultural event in Europe based on avant-garde Fluxus movement ideas on such a large scale,“ stated  Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009 Executive Manager Dalia Bankauskaite during a media conference held at the World Travel Market..

At the World Travel Market Lithuania will be presenting an exceptional project, which will undoubtedly have a major impact on further increasing tourism to Lithuania and the growth of tourism services and infrastructure. Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, will in 2009 become the officially designated European Capital of Culture.  

The Sea Festival is the biggest traditional summer festival in Lithuania attracting half a million visitors every year and has been organized for more than 70 years in Klaipeda. Klaipeda is the only seaport in Lithuania and is the most northern ice – free port in the Baltic...

There are only 561 days to go before we can hail Vilnius as European Capital of Culture. Lithuanian capital is the first city in the Post-Soviet block to be designated this reputable title....  

After a four years gap Lithuania’s largest cultural event – the World Lithuanian Song Festival - will take place on 5th to 8th  July in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, and, the first time, in Kaunas, Lithuania’s second largest city…

The 34th Annual International Folklore Festival will be held in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital from 23rd to 27th of May and present folk groups from all of Europe and Asia. Concerts and performances in main city squares will feature outstanding soloists and superb ensembles…

In Lithuania Easter is both the most important religious festival of the year, and also the most important secular holiday, and this is fully reflected at the Open Air Museum of Lithuania. The main events at the Museum take place on Easter Monday, and the museum normally has between two and five thousand visitors on that day…
